If you've been following along, you've thought about your career machine, your systems, your 4Rs.
Now it's time to act.
Q1 is the highest-leverage quarter for career moves. And it's already started.
Here's why, and how to use it.
Your 90-Day Career Action Plan
TL;DR: Q1 is the highest-leverage quarter for career momentum. Whether you're job searching, positioning for a promotion, or building career power for moves later this year or beyond, here's how to use the next 90 days to set yourself up.
Why Q1 Matters
Whether you're actively job searching, building toward a promotion, or strengthening your career power for moves later in the year: Q1 is when momentum gets built.
1. The market is moving.
Budgets are fresh. Headcount is being approved. Leaders are planning their teams for the year. If you're a Builder or Explorer, this is when roles are being created. If you're an Enhancer or Stabilizer, this is when visibility investments pay off.
2. Decision-makers are thinking ahead.
Q1 is strategy season. Leaders are assessing gaps, identifying talent, and making plans. Whether your goal is a promotion, a lateral move, or just getting on the radar, now is when those conversations matter.
3. Most people are still asleep.
Your competitors are recovering from the holidays. Still "getting back into it." Still planning to plan. While they drift, you can build.
4. Momentum compounds.
What you do in the next 90 days sets the trajectory for the year. Whether you're targeting a move in Q2, Q3, or even 2027, the groundwork gets laid now.
Your Q1 Career Action Plan
Here's a simple framework to make the quarter count:
Bold Career Infographic - 90-Day Career Action Planner
Weeks 1-4: Clarify
What do you actually want this year? (Role, scope, environment, trajectory)
What are your constraints? (Clarity, positioning, relationships, or action)
What’s your mechanism for solving those constraints? (DIY, coaching/services, network)
What does success look like by January 31?
Weeks 5-8: Build
Execute your weekly career system (visibility, relationships, reflection)
Address your constraints with focused effort (note there’s an order…market action should only follow positioning, which follows clarity)
Create one visible artifact (elevated LinkedIn profile, resume post, project, presentation)
Weeks 9-12: Move (or Position to Move)
Activate your network for opportunities. Or plant seeds for later.
Have the conversations you've been avoiding
Make the ask (promotion, project, introduction, application). Or build the relationships that make the ask easier when you're ready.
The key: Don't try to do everything. Do one thing per week that moves your career forward, whatever "forward" means for your current step. That's 12 meaningful actions by end of quarter. That's how momentum builds.
Not sure what your next professional step is? Most people fall into one of five types: Builder (moving up), Stabilizer (getting back on track), Enhancer (strengthening your position), Explorer (pivoting or changing direction), or Creator (building something of your own). Your Q1 actions should match your type.
The Honest Truth
I've been coaching senior professionals for 20+ years.
And here's what I've learned:
Information isn't the problem. You know what you should be doing. You've read the books. You've watched the videos. You've saved the posts.
So what is the problem? There are four, and they have to be solved in order.
1. Clarity
You can't execute on a fuzzy goal. Most people skip this step because it's uncomfortable. They jump into action (networking, applying, updating LinkedIn) without knowing what they're actually building toward. Result: wasted effort, scattered energy, and that nagging feeling that you're spinning your wheels.
But clarity isn't just about direction. It's also about offering. What do you bring? What are your professional assets: your experience, your capabilities, your traits, your track record? If you're fuzzy on your own value, you'll face a confidence crisis that holds back action. You won't network effectively. You won't interview well. You'll hesitate when you should move.
The fix: Get honest about what you want and what you bring. What's your next professional step? Are you a Builder (moving up), Stabilizer (getting back on track), Enhancer (strengthening your position), Explorer (pivoting), or Creator (building something of your own)? And what are the professional assets that make you valuable? Different goals require different strategies, but all of them require knowing your value.
2. Positioning
Clarity without positioning is a secret no one knows about. You might know your value, but does the market? Can you articulate it in a way that resonates with decision-makers? Most senior professionals are under-marketed: strong track record, weak visibility.
The fix: Develop your professional identity. Know your story. Update your materials: your LinkedIn profile, your resume, your talking points. Build the assets that make you findable and referable.
3. Strategy & Sequence
Knowing what to do isn't enough. You need to know what order to do it in. I watch people burn months on tactics that should come later: networking before they have a clear story, applying before they've built relationships, asking for referrals before they've earned them.
The fix: Follow the right sequence. Clarity → Positioning → Relationship-building → Opportunity generation → Conversion. Skip steps and you'll spin.
4. Execution
Finally, yes: execution. Alone, it's hard to stay consistent. Hard to hold yourself accountable. Hard to push through the discomfort of visibility and self-promotion.
The fix: Systems beat motivation. Build a weekly rhythm. Track your actions. Get support if you need it, whether that's a coach, an accountability partner, or a committed peer group.
That's why the career machine concept from last week's newsletter matters. It's not about working harder. It's about building structure that makes the right actions inevitable.
