The Career Unlock Most Professionals Never Get

Here's something I see constantly in my client work.

A senior professional…let's say director level, 15+ years of experience, loses their job. Maybe through restructuring, maybe through a bad-fit role that didn't work out. It happens.

What follows is predictable. They dust off their resume, start applying to postings, and walk into interviews hoping that some light interview prep and their track record will speak for itself.

It doesn’t.

The Career Unlock Most Professionals Never Get

TL;DR: The biggest unlock for senior professionals isn't a better resume or a networking hack. It's doing the deep work to understand and articulate your professional value. When you can say what you bring, specifically, confidently, and in a way that resonates, everything changes. Leadership. Interviews. Networking. Even how recruiters advocate for you.

Not because they lack the experience. Not because they aren't talented. But because first, along those 15+ years, they never really figured out their professional value. And somewhere between the job loss and the job search, their confidence cracked. And without confidence, they can't articulate what they actually bring to the table.

So they undersell. They interview for roles beneath them. They accept salary ranges below their market value because they've lost sight of their own worth.

Sound familiar? Even if you haven't lost a job, you might recognize this pattern. It shows up every time someone says "I'm analytical" in an interview instead of explaining how their analysis actually changed outcomes. Every time someone lists responsibilities on a resume instead of demonstrating impact.

This is the gap most professionals never close. And it's not about skill.

What Actually Fixes It

I'm working with a Finance Director right now with a strong background. When we started, he was demoralized. Months of searching. Interviews that went nowhere. Roles that felt like compromises.

The problem wasn't his experience. It was that he couldn't see it clearly enough to communicate it.

So we went to work on his Professional Value - the process of mining your career for the specific, tangible, unique value you create.

We dug into questions. And what emerged was striking. This wasn't just a finance director supervising reporting. This was someone who:

  • Saw beyond the numbers to stretch financial resources toward business objectives
  • Built deep trust with non-finance stakeholders
  • Created scalable solutions that outlived his tenure
  • Thought at an enterprise level about organizational improvement

None of that was on his resume when we started.

Here's what happened this week: he walked into an interview with a partner at an executive recruiting firm. With confidence and clarity. The partner was impressed, told him he had the profile of a CFO and would advocate for him in the search.

Why This Matters For You

Most professionals skip this work entirely.

They update their resume with new job titles. They tweak their LinkedIn headline. They prepare too lightly for interviews by rehearsing answers to common questions.

All of that is surface-level. It's like painting a house without fixing the foundation.

Your Professional Value is the foundation. It's the answer to the question every hiring decision ultimately comes down to: What specific problems do you solve, and what evidence do you have that you solve them well?

When that answer is clear in your own mind, three things change:

  1. You stop underselling. You interview at the right level because you know your level. You don't accept ranges below your market because you can make a case for your worth.
  2. You attract instead of chase. When your LinkedIn, your resume, and your conversations all tell a clear, specific, compelling story, recruiters notice. Hiring managers remember you. Your network knows exactly who to refer you to.
  3. You interview with conviction. There's a massive difference between someone who's hoping to be chosen and someone who knows exactly what they bring. Interviewers feel the difference in the first five minutes.

Your Move

I’ll leave you with a quick exercise.

Pick your best role. The one where you had the most impact. Then answer this question:

What would NOT have happened if you hadn't been there?

When you apply an analysis of this and other questions across your key roles, you'll start to see patterns. Those patterns are your professional signature. The thread that runs through everything you do.

And once you can see it, you can learn how to say it. Confidently. In any room.
